Mandatory implementation of type C charger cables for smartphones chargers and electronic devices.. Starting from 1st August 2024, products meet the requirements of the updated standard specifications.
The Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization (SASO) has issued a new regulation standardizing charging ports for smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices sold in the Kingdom.
As per Executive Decision No. 018, manufacturers must adopt either the USB Type-C or USB Power Delivery standards specified in SASO IEC 62680-1-2:2017 and SASO IEC 62680-1-3:2017 for charging ports on new models of portable electronics.
This move aims to reduce e-waste and make charging more convenient for consumers by enabling them to use a common charger across different brands and device types. It also supports Saudi Arabia's sustainability goals.
All conformity assessment bodies accredited by SASO are required to ensure compliance with these updated technical standards during product certification.
The regulation will apply to new smartphone and electronics models launched after the implementation date, which is yet to be announced. Existing certified models already in the market will be allowed to continue sales.
We urge all manufacturers and importers to start aligning their product roadmaps accordingly to meet this upcoming SASO mandate on unified charging solutions.
